Myth or Fact About Breast Implants Explained in NY: #1 Breast implants need to be changed every ten years.
It may be that people have gotten this misconception that implants need to be changed every ten years, because some of the leaders in manufacturing implants will provide a 10-year warranty on their products. Most plastic surgeons see implants lasting anywhere from 10 to 25 years.
Another possible piece of information that may influence this misconception is that the FDA released a report in 2011 stating that after 10 years, 1 out of 5 patients needed some kind of procedure, whether for broken implant or excessive scarring inside the breast (capsular contracture). So, 20% of the patients needed follow up surgery, but 80% were fine after 10 years.
Implants have been developed to be very safe; and manufacturers and developers continue on working towards even more safety.
Signs That You Might Need Surgery to Replace Your Implants
If you have saline implants, you may notice a sudden decrease in your breast, indicating that your implant ruptured. The saline is perfectly safe, and will absorb into your body over a few days, but you will have to have surgery to correct the issue.
Using Gummy Bears or silicone filled implants will not create such a dramatic or sudden change, should there be a break or tear. So, it is recommended that silicone implants get checked periodically by MRI. If a tear shows, then a replacement surgery will have to be performed.
The issue of capsular contracture is another reason for additional surgery. This is when there is an excessive growth of scar tissue around the implant. This is not an implant failure, but the body’s defense mechanism, which considers the implant a foreign object. Recently, there has been some consideration that the textured implants may assist in preventing this condition.
