Are Gummy Bear Implants Safe?

Breast implants in the United States have a long and checkered past. The first generation of silicone breast implants was developed in the 1960s, and breast implant technology has continued to develop ever since.

Silicone implants have had a troubled past; in earlier generations, some silicone models used thin shells or shells coated in polyurethane, and this hasn’t always led to great results for the patient. Saline implants (first developed in the 1960s) have been viewed as “safer” within the United States, but they don’t look or feel as natural as silicone implants and aren’t favored in the rest of the world.

The newest silicone gel implants are safer than ever before, while still allowing your breasts to look and feel natural.

What are Gummy Bear Implants?

Gummy Bear implants are form-stable silicone gel implants. They maintain their shape even when the implant shell is broken, which helps to reduce the risk of silicone migrating through your body. Because the silicone gel is thicker, they can be shaped in a variety of different ways, allowing your surgeon to select the perfect profile for you.

Why are Gummy Bear Implants Safer?

With implants, two common risks are the risk of capsular contracture and the risk of breakage or leakage. When an implant is inserted into your body, the body forms a capsule of tissue around the implant. In rare cases, this capsule can tighten and contract, causing pain and hardness in the breast. Most studies indicate that Gummy Bear implants have a lower risk of capsular contracture than traditional implants, although it’s still uncertain why the rates are lower.

The other risk is that an implant will break or leak. The shell on any type of implant is susceptible to breakage, but most breakage occurs when the shell folds; with the cohesive gel of Gummy Bear implants, these folds are less likely, which decreases the risk of breakage. The other side of breakage is the question of whether the Gummy Bear implants will allow breast to diffuse through the rest of the body, and with Gummy Bear implants, it’s extremely rare that the silicone gel will spread outside of the breast.
